How Successful is a Dental Implant Restoration?
Are you considering your tooth replacement options? Implant restorations are among the most popular ways to restore severely damaged or missing teeth. When exploring this restoration method, it is a good idea to learn how the process works and what to expect.
The success of dental implant restorations
The treatment process
Implant restorations are used to restore, renew, or replace teeth that are in poor condition or missing. The entire process can be lengthy, but the wait is worth it. General dentists can begin and oversee the entire implant restoration process from start to finish. Below are the steps of the process.
Implant placement
The patient will undergo an implant placement procedure, in which an titanium post is put into their jawbone. The implant acts as the replacement root, stimulating the jawbone and allowing the patient to smile, eat, and speak as normal. While our office does not provide implant surgery, we will work with the patient to ensure that they have a clear restoration plan going forward.
Osseointegration
The next step in the implant restoration process is for the patient to heal. The titanium post needs time to heal and fuse with the natural bone to ensure it can support the artificial tooth or teeth. This process, known as osseointegration, can take about 3 to 6 months to complete.
Completing the restoration
After the post has fully fused with the jawbone, the general dentist can place the prosthetic to finish off the implant restoration. The choice of restoration depends on the patient’s needs. For example, for a single missing tooth, they may recommend an implant crown or bridge. However, for multiple missing teeth in an arch, the dentist may suggest an implant-supported denture.
Will the process be successful?
Implant restorations are known for their long-term success rate. According to the Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery, this treatment has a success rate of 97% at ten years and 75% at 20 years. While complications are possible, they are relatively rare and usually occur within the first few months of restoration placement.
Implant restorations are considered successful because of their underlying titanium composition. Titanium is a biodegradable material that the body rarely rejects, allowing it to fuse with the bone tissue. However, in the rare event of treatment failure, the general dentist can take further steps to try to salvage the implant restoration.
The success of the treatment will also depend on the patient’s commitment to oral hygiene. After placing the implant restoration, they are at a higher risk of infections. Consistent brushing and flossing, as well as regular follow-up visits with their dentist, can help prevent complications like peri-implantitis. Furthermore, patients can contribute to their treatment success by abstaining from smoking and other tobacco use, as this habit can impair their healing process and lead to treatment failure.
