Everything You Need to Know About a Dental Implant Restoration
An implant restoration is a great way to restore or replace teeth that are severely damaged or missing. Dentists provide different kinds of dental restorations to adult patients who want to improve their oral health and the way their smile appears. Implant restorations, in particular, are a bit more involved than other restorations. Here is everything you should know about the implant restoration treatment process.
Implant restorations: what they are and how they work
An implant restoration is the process of restoring or replacing a badly damaged tooth through a fixed crown, bridge, or denture. These restorations replace the tooth's structure, which helps provide support to the artificial tooth (prosthesis).
The dental implant restoration process
While Dental Health Associates, PC does not place implants at our Portland office, we do work with patients through and after their recovery period. The recovery process is important because it allows the implant to fuse with the natural bone through a process called osseointegration. Implant restorations preserve the patient’s natural jawbone, preventing future issues.
After three to 6 months of osseointegration, the patient can return to our office for the abutment placement. The abutment serves as the attachment piece connecting the titanium post to the prosthesis. Abutments are very small metal pieces that sit at the gumline. They are made of metal and tend to be circular.
Lastly, the patient can undergo the placement of the prosthesis, also known as an artificial tooth. When a single restoration is placed, the general dentist will typically recommend an implant crown. Implant crowns are an ideal option because they are strong and appear natural. In the case of multiple implant restorations, fixed bridges or dentures may be a better option.
Things to note
When considering an implant restoration, it is important to be aware of the commitment. The entire process requires time and patience to ensure long-lasting results. Additionally, there is a chance of soreness and discomfort. Being aware of what to expect can be helpful when considering tooth replacement options.
